BOOK REVIEW.

By the river pampa I stood
By
Geetha Abraham jose.
This novel spans over generations and is based on the life of Syrian Christians in kerala
The story revolves around the life of a woman, the protagonist of the novel is annamachi. A woman who broke rules and reversed the dos and donts that convention demanded of her.
The book is set in a backdrop where the feudal lords reigned and social discrimination was the order of the day. The very social setup makes the most loved daughter of the house hate the strong social differences prevalent in the village. Their house is referred to as "The Gold House" and the power and influence the feudal lords had in the village is evident from the style of story telling.
After Thoma, a farm workers son rescues annamachis life from the raging waters of the pampa river, the beautiful high caste Syrian Christian girl falls in love with him. And later when her father, Mathen wants her to get married to another boy, a Syrian Christian, she confesses about her relationship to her father who takes extreme steps to remove the boy from the scene.
The rest of annamachis life is spent in a place away from their village, and annamachi returns to her village years later to find that she would never again feel at home in her own house.
The novel is packed with surprises and as the tale unfolds one can find new twists and turns in the even otherwise interesting story, the riddles of their lives were being solved but not in a manner that one would adopt to solve riddles.
"By the river pampa I stood" is not a book which would set your pulse racing when reading it, but it would make you come back to it and read it again, the author has definitely succeeded in sustaining the attention of the readers from the beginning till the end of the book and the various surprise elements in between.
